What is Positive Affirmation, and what can it do for you?

If you have ever doubted your ability…if you have ever been afraid to step out of your comfort zone…if you have ever felt insecure about your position or knowledge…

This is for you.

In the mid to late 90’s there was a skit on Saturday Night Live titled “Positive Affirmations with Stuart Smalley”.  I remember laughing my way through his famous line “I’m good enough… I’m smart enough… and doggone it people like me!” while he turned and smiled at himself in the mirror.

Back then I laughed through the comedy without ever realizing the impact this type of thinking would have on my life. I had a rough childhood, and kept a lot of emotional baggage bottled up for years. I didn’t learn the power of positive thinking until later in life, when my circumstances forced me to step up or give up. I had to quit letting my past determine my future.

There was no gray area for me. Not stepping up, meant I was giving up whether I liked it or not. I was forced to become a better, stronger person. I was forced to believe in myself, and through that, I learned to believe in people.

You are no different than I am. Maybe you haven’t had that big test of character yet, or you didn’t handle it well. There is still hope for you. Life is all about discovery. The sooner you learn that, the sooner you will realize how powerful you really can be. This is where daily positive affirmations can change the way you look at yourself in the mirror.

Pop the Bubble

Living in your comfort zone, is like being in a bubble. You have to pop the bubble to get out and breath. Those first breaths are short and forced. You are breathing new air in a new atmosphere. But your lungs will adjust.

To start, you are going to have to tear a page out of the Stuart Smalley handbook (minus the misinformed self help addict approach),  start with some positive affirmations and end with a good long look in the mirror.

You Can Literally Speak Things Into Being

I know it sounds cheesy and a little 12 step-ish, but it works. Here is how you do it. Write down 3 of your weaknesses and 3 of your strengths. On a separate sheet rewrite all of those into strengths. If you are afraid to speak in public, write it like this:

“I am a great public speaker”.

Go through this list every day at least once in the morning, and once before bed. Try to see it, and feel good about it. Smile when you say it, and let the first thoughts of your morning, and the last thoughts of your day be positive affirmations.  The only real obstacle to success in your life, is you, your thinking, and your actions.

A friend of mine in Basic Training had never fired a gun. He was extremely afraid of failing out of the Army for his lack of skills. We worked together every day on positioning, breathing and technique. Most of all we worked on mindset. When he was later awarded a sharpshooter badge, the Drill Sergeant made the comment, “Pretty good for your first time out”. He responded, “I shot that score every night for two weeks prior to stepping out on that range”.

If you tell your mind it can do these things, it will begin to act accordingly.

I Believe In You. Now It’s Your Turn To Believe In Yourself

I really and truly believe that you can do these things. The problem is, even with the support of family and friends who know you, and can see your potential, it is still you who will have to move.

You may feel like there are so many things that you aren’t good at. The thing is you can be. All it takes is a desire to achieve, and the determination to see it through. You have to tell yourself you can do these things, and reprogram the negative thought process that holds you back. A good friend of mine, Dwayne Huggins speaks on this and becoming an Alpha Networker often. He is fine tuning the art of leadership. Check out some of his training and ideas. I think you’ll be glad you did. He has a great grasp on turning his weaknesses into strengths.

My wife asked me yesterday when I talked to her about writing this article; “What are some things you feel you are not good at? Maybe you can use them in the article.” The thing is, I couldn’t think of any. Not because I am good at everything, but because I don’t think that way. I spend my time building on my strengths. No matter how low the level of strength is to start, I never call it a weakness. It is just a strength in development.

When Pigs Fly

I have heard so many times, that the things I have accomplished are impossible. “You will never walk again”. “This is not for someone with your medical history”. The fact is, the only thing holding most people back is the programmed negativity that comes from their peers.

Get those people out of your life, and change your thinking. Remove the negativity, and begin to see yourself for how capable you truly are.

Did you know that the US sends millions of pounds of pork overseas each year?

Pigs fly every day.

Man on a Mission

When I took my first step after breaking my back, I was ecstatic. I was back on top of the world again, and going to prove that I could get back into combat. When I lifted my foot for the second step, the pain overloaded my nervous system and I hit the floor in muscle spasms, wishing I would die to end the pain.

That night, I lay strapped down to a hospital bed, talking to myself, and reassuring myself that I could do this. That is positive affirmation. I spoke it into being. The next day I tried again, and again…and again. I had never been tested so fully in my life. But in the end I passed the test.

I actually had a nurse tape a hand written sign above my bed reading, “pain is weakness, leaving your body”. I had no choice but to lie there and stare at that for hours every day.

Write these notes and hang them around your  house or office. Read them each time you pass by. I guarantee that you will begin to think in a whole new way.

“I’m good enough. I’m Smart enough, and Dog gone-it, people like me”.

This has been, Positive Affirmations with Chris Owen.

Good morning Sweetie,

Woohoo, great post! I’m a big fan of positive affirmations. I like the outlook on weaknesses… “it’s just a strength in development.”

Love you,
Tragena

Hey Tragena,

You are also a great example of positive affirmation. I don’t know how many times I have had to move notes taped to the mirror just to see myself in it.

I believe all weaknesses are just an opportunity for improvement.

Love You.
Chris

Hey Chris

Yet another value packed post.

Thanks for the mention, means a lot to be recognized for the developments I make.

Affirmations are very powerful, as you say you can speak your way into getting whatever your affirmation is. Make sure when it is spoken the belief behind it is real and strong. The belief, the words and the repetition will firmly place you on the right road to where you want to go.

Hey Dwayne,

No problem, you definitely have a foothold in this area. You’re dead on with that too…belief and repetition make all the difference in the world.

Thanks for coming by.

Hey Chris,
Another awesome post. One of my favorite parts in particular is ridding yourself of the negative influences in your life. People would be surprised at how they take on the negative persona of their friends from just hanging around them.

The other thing that I always remember hearing is you take look at the income of your closest friends and average it, and that will be close to yours as a result of your relationships. I am not sure how much truth there is to that saying, but when I started paying attention, I really noticed how some negative attitudes in my friends were rubbing off on me.

Naturally, most of my friends are also in construction, but unlike me they seem complacent to just deal with the current situation instead of taking action to change it for the better. As a result, I have moved away from the daily contact I used to have with these people. Not because I don’t still like hanging out with them, but because I can’t afford to have their attitudes rubbing off on me.

Great post,
Eric

Hey Eric,

I really like that income average summary. I think I read something like that in “The Magic of Thinking Big”. It really is true. There may be one guy in the group that is successful, but usually the others feed off of his success in the wrong way. I had a lot of friends growing up that hung out with the guys with money just to get them to pay for things. I don’t think they ever picked up on I can do this too mentality. Just the “gimme” mentality.

I thought there would be some that recognized that pic. I looked for one with him looking in the mirror but couldn’t find it. I still laugh when I think about the episode he made Charles Barkley cry.

Hey Chris,

As always powerful and meaningful! Great post!

I’m huge at positive affirmation and pasting things all over the wall, mirror, whiteboards, and iPhone. I learn this years ago, I know it wasn’t from a book. Because I didn’t start reading books until 4 years ago. Now, I can’t put them down.

I’m going to go and do a search for that skit now! I would like to add one thing…Don’t forget to take action along with the positive affirmation.

Have a great day…
Josh

Hey Josh,

I like that you mentioned your iphone as a place to put your affirmations. So many people carry these phones around loaded with electronic distractions. Why not utilize this as a positive influence on your mindset. Thanks for adding to the discussion.

Hey Chris,

I find myself looking forward to your posts, and you never seem to let me down!

Another massive post here. I learned a lot od this “positive thinking” whn reading “Think and Grow Rich” – It is a key part of self development.

You spelled it out perfectly for your readers here.

Look forward to your next post my friend.

Hey Wayne,

Thanks for coming by. I loved “Think and Grow Rich”. So much so that I bought the rights to it and offer it free here to subscribers. Along with a ton of other greats such as “The Magic of Thinking Big”.

Hey, I noticed you were signing out today. A few posts ago you were singing out. My wife and I were wondering if it was a typo or dependent on your mood.

We decided that singing out fits your personality better. Especially with your unique “Happy” Gravatar. You just look like you should be singing out.

Awesome post once again, Chris!

I remember that skit well and it brought a smile on my face to see that picture.

I especially like your “pain is weakness leaving the body” quote.

It’s a truly amazing story about you learning to walk again and I really appreciate you sharing it with us.

I also use affirmations and have found them tremendously useful. One thing I’ve been doing is pointing to my head and my heart and saying “All I need is right here.”

Hey Derek,

I have to say, just what you have shared in my comments sections on this site gives a great insight into your personality and how real you are. You are never afraid to share something personal and sometimes hard.

I think I will go see if you got out a new post today. Those reading this should follow me.

Hey Chris,

I love that you termed a “weakness” as a “strength in development”!

It’s all about mind over matter and what we are allowing our “inner self” to tell us.

Thank you for sharing your personal story with us. It is very touching.

Warm Regards,
Twila

Hey Twila,

I like your thinking. It IS truly us “allowing” negativity to control our direction.

If we begin to change our thought process to zero weaknesses, with everything being a work in progress, that is where true growth begins.

“Pain is weakness leaving your body” That’s an awesome quote my friend.

Your story is definitely something I can associate with, when I was 18 I fractured a vertebra in my lower back (and damaged some other things), not as bad as what you did, but I was told by “Experts” that I would have to give up on the idea of playing any sports and would have a weakness for life……

I was too stubborn to listen…

Last year I held the state record for deadlift….

The biggest step to achieving, in my opinion at least, is believing in yourself enough to not listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t.

Keep up the positive affirmations up, and prepare for some temporary “pain”.

Sorry if I’m getting off topic but you really have me thinking.
Thanks mate (you get use to the Australian slang ;) )

Chris,

You ALWAYS inspire me. What a great message! My husband is a great fan of “Positive Affirmations” and after me all the time to use them.

I think it’s a great idea to write down your weaknesses, move them over to the other side and make them your positive “I Am” statements. And then read them first thing in the morning and last thing at night before going to bed.

I will have to try that out.

Thanks for another value packed post! … And thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts. I appreciate you!

Hey Ilka,

I am really happy to write something that inspires people. I can’t take all the credit though. My wife is not only my inspiration, but she also gives me some great idea’s to write about too. I am currently working on getting her to write a post of her own for this site. If she can inspire you guys half as much as she does me, it will be a hit.

By the way, I love the material you come up with on your site. The story about the king is priceless.

Thank you, Chris, for your kind and encouraging words! That story is one of my favorites of Tolstoy and not just because it is a lot shorter than “War and Peace.” :)

It really comes through in your posts that you love to inspire people. You have a great gift here.

But… now that you made me curious, I can’t wait to read your wife’s post. Bet it will be great. Hopefully she won’t let us wait too long :)

Hey Ilka,

I almost missed this reply. I guess you have already seen my wifes post by now. It is crazy how well it is doing.

I think she took care of the inspiration part very well.

Now I am going to look up that book.

Thanks for stopping by,
